Interior vs. exterior: when to paint in the Sacramento Valley
Timing matters more than people expect — especially for exteriors. Here's how painters around Woodland, Davis, West Sacramento, and Dixon think about when to paint.
Exteriors: aim for the dry season
Paint needs dry surfaces and mild temperatures to cure properly. In our valley climate that means roughly late spring through early fall — long stretches with no rain and moderate overnight temps. Painting in cold, damp, or rainy conditions can trap moisture and lead to peeling later, so most local crews schedule exteriors around the dry window. The upside: our summers are long, so there's plenty of runway.
Interiors: any time of year
Inside, climate barely matters — interiors get painted year-round. Winter is often a great time to book interior work, since it's the off-season for exteriors and crews have more availability. Good ventilation and low-VOC paint keep the job comfortable even with windows closed.
Prep beats timing
The single biggest factor in how long a paint job lasts isn't the brand of paint — it's the prep. Washing, scraping, sanding, priming bare spots, and caulking gaps is what makes a coat bond and last. A rushed job in perfect weather will fail before a well-prepped job in average weather. When you compare quotes, look at how much prep each one actually includes.
